Getting in front of the right people can open a door. Helping them understand the value of what you offer makes that opportunity meaningful.
That idea was at the heart of the message Sur-Ryl Marketing Founder and CEO Sequoia Houston shared at Capital Is Culture LIVE on October 26. The inaugural event took place during the 2026 NMSDC Annual Conference & Exchange in Los Angeles.
Entrepreneurs joined corporate representatives and capital providers to discuss what it takes to prepare for growth. Conversations explored access to funding and the challenges of competing for contracts. Sequoia brought a marketing perspective to that discussion: once an opportunity opens up, how do you help someone understand why your business belongs in the conversation?
Helping people understand why your work matters
Business owners know how much goes into what they do. Explaining it to someone encountering the business for the first time can be surprisingly difficult. The instinct is often to share more. More services. More credentials. More details about everything the company can deliver.
But the person listening needs a way into the story. They need to recognize how the business can help them and why that help matters.
During her rapid-fire session, Sequoia explored how an audience-centered message can make that value easier to recognize. When the story centers around their needs, it becomes easier for them to see the value of what you offer.
With 2027 approaching, she also encouraged attendees to make time to think through their marketing before another year gets underway. That reflection starts with a simple question: what does your audience need to understand before they can take the next step with you?
It’s a question that guides our work at Sur-Ryl Marketing, and one we were excited to explore with fellow entrepreneurs.
A meaningful moment for Sur-Ryl Marketing
Participating in Capital Is Culture LIVE was especially meaningful because it took place one day before Sur-Ryl Marketing’s 17th anniversary.
Since 2009, we’ve helped organizations explain their work in ways that matter to the people they serve. Contributing to a conversation about helping other businesses grow felt like a fitting way to mark the milestone.
We’re grateful to Maleeka Catron and the Capital Is Culture LIVE team for bringing the event to life, and to Daryle Johnson of The Advantage Community for opening the door to our participation.
Keep the momentum going
Making time to think about your marketing is a valuable start. Turning those thoughts into a plan can be easier with some guidance.
Sur-Ryl Marketing is hosting the Get in Gear for the New Year Challenge, a five-day experience that will help you work through all four parts of The SOUL Method™. You’ll develop clearer messaging and a marketing plan you can put to use as you prepare for the year ahead.
