Sequoia Houston first got to know the San Fernando Valley Youth Chorus from behind a camera, photographing young singers as they shared their work onstage.
Now, that relationship is growing in a new direction. On May 19, the chorus’s board voted unanimously to welcome the Sur-Ryl Marketing Founder and CEO as a member.
A familiar organization, a new way to contribute
Sequoia’s involvement with the chorus began with concert photography in 2024. Since then, the relationship has expanded to include marketing support, giving our team a closer look at the work that happens beyond a performance.
A concert is the moment audiences get to see. Behind it is an organization working to give young people opportunities to learn and perform together. Helping families discover those opportunities, and helping supporters understand why they matter, is part of sustaining that work.
Joining the board gives Sequoia another way to support the chorus. She brings her marketing experience and a growing understanding of the organization’s work with local families.
Supporting the stories close to home
For Sequoia, supporting young performers is personal. Her own arts education helped her find her voice.
“I was a choir kid since before I could even talk. I sang in the church, participated in musicals at school and found my voice when I attended both W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Magnet and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Texas. I know the importance of arts education for children and I’m honored to have the opportunity to support the next generation of artists in such a meaningful way.”
